YOGYAKARTA, AKSIKATA.Com – Masjid Gedhe Mataram Kotagede terletak di selatan kawasan Pasar Kotagede sekarang, tepatnya di Dusun Sayangan, Desa Jagalan, Kecamatan Banguntapan, Kabupaten Bantul, Propinsi Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. Tahun pembangunan masjid ini belum diketahui secara pasti, tetapi diduga dibangun pada masa pemerintahan Sultan Agung (1613–1645 M).

Masjid ini berada di dekat kompleks makam pendiri Kerajaan Mataram Islam beserta keluarganya di bagian selatan masjid dan pemandian Sendang Seliran. Masjid Gedhe Mataram memiliki arsitektur campuran antara Jawa dan Hindu atau Budha.

Arsitektur Jawa tampak jelas di bangunan masjid, sementara arsitektur Hindu atau Budha terlihat di pintu gerbang atau gapura yang berbentuk paduraksa serta pagar tembok yang mengelilingi masjid.

Bangunan masjid ini merupakan bentuk toleransi Sultan Agung pada warga yang ikut membangun masjid yang masih memeluk agama Hindu dan Buddha.

Pembangunannya dimaksudkan untuk sarana pengembangan agama Islam di daerah selatan Jawa. Keberadaan masjid kuno di tengah perkampungan ini sampai sekarang masih terlihat hidup. Warga masih menggunakannya sebagai tempat melaksanakan kegiatan keagamaan.
